The McArthur River Project is located 550km south-east of Darwin in the southern portion of the Batten Fault Zone.

The project area covers a similar lithological package to that found at Glencore’s world-class McArthur River Zinc Mine some 60km to the north, and is highly prospective for Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag deposits of a similar style.

Exploration within the McArthur River tenements has been conducted by various companies over more than 50 years, with the results indicating that the Wollogorang Formation represents the most prospective geological sequence for new discoveries.

The Wollogorang Formation wraps around the Mallapunyah Dome and has been defined over some 25km of strike extent within tenure, with historical mapping and sampling programs identifying several large multi-element anomalous areas.

Recent Exploration

In 2014, TNG completed two diamond drill holes for a total of 600m. These holes were positioned on historic IP anomalies to intersect the best geochemical anomalism in the Wollogorang Formation, and also be adjacent to the Mallapunyah and Tawallah Faults, two important regional fault structures.

Both holes intersected over 20m of black organic-rich shales with sulphide contents in the 5-15% range:

  • 25m of visible sulphides from 60-85m down-hole in the northern hole, 14MCDDH001; and
  • 23m of visible sulphides from 81-104m down-hole in the southern hole, 14MCDDH002.

Maximum assay values were 2,020ppm zinc and 2,140ppm Cu, with nine values of zinc over 0.1%.

Mapping in 2015 delineated stratabound copper mineralisation over an area of 600 x 400 metres, with assays up to 48.3% Cu.

Anomalism corresponds with the ~20m thick basal shale bed of the Wollogorang Formation which dips gently to the east. This anomalous zone is open both along strike and down dip and warrants drill testing.

Prospectivity

The work completed to date has outlined four key anomalous zones, all of which are confined to the central (Zn-Pb-Ag) or lower (Cu) Wollogorang Formation.

All results point to the organic-rich sulphidic shales of the Wollogorang Formation having similar haloes and base metal mineralisation style to the McArthur River mine.

There is also potential for further targets to be outlined by planned geophysics across the project area. The entire tenement package lies within the Batten Fault Zone, which hosts all of the significant resources outlined to date in the McArthur Basin including the recent Teena discovery.
